Gwynedd Psychological Services at RYAH

For the past 25 years, Gwynedd Psychological Services has specialized in providing comprehensive therapeutic services to help children, adolescents, couples, and families achieve emotionally healthy and fulfilling lifestyles. They believe in fostering our clients’ inherent abilities to create happy families. They strive to empower families to open their hearts to the possibilities for growth and change and to impart a sense of inner tranquility and peace when encountering the everyday stressors that affect them. What sets them apart is that they embrace the power of parents to help their children to engage in positive friendships and family relationships, to be academically successful, to be motivated to make healthy choices, and to be resilient to the challenges of childhood and adolescence.

GPS offer a wide range of integrative therapeutic services. Their therapists provide psychological testing to assess and recommend treatment options for a variety of mental health concerns such as ADHD, learning issues, and mood disorders. We help parents manage difficult behaviors in their children and adolescents through early intervention treatment strategies, such as parenting skills and behavioral modification plans. They focus on family systems, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, humanistic, and psychodynamic approaches in our individual, family, group, and couples therapy. They believe in mindfulness practices such as meditation and guided imagery to assist in stress management and overall wellness. They also incorporate play therapy, art therapy, drama therapy, and sand tray therapy techniques when helping younger children.

GPS provides services such as individual therapy for adults, teens, and children; multi-systemic family therapy; psychological testing and assessment; educational consultation; and play therapy/ sand tray therapy for our younger children. They assist individuals and families in coping with a variety of conditions including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, behavioral disorders, eating disorders, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorders, and issues of grief and loss. Their multi-systemic family therapists assist families and couples in learning how to communicate more effectively and in coping with such losses as separation and divorce. GPS works with a variety of families including step-families and blended families. Their psychotherapists also provide parenting education and teach parents to utilize behavioral interventions in working with children who present as behaviorally challenging.

Their psychological testing specialists are trained in a multitude of assessments including cognitive assessments (WISC-IV, WAIS-IV, WPPSI-III), achievement tests (WIAT-II, Woodcock Johnson), tests of Visual Motor Integration (Bender, Beery), projective measures of personality (Rorschach, TAT/CAT), personality assessments (MMPI-2, MMPI-A), and a wide variety of behavioral rating scales (BASC 2, Connors Rating Scales, CDI, BDI, etc.).

Counseling and Psychological Services

The therapists who provide services at RYAH believe that integrating the care of mind, body and spirit fosters living the best life possible. As part of the integrative approach, independent therapists offer adult, child, and adolescent psychotherapy, family therapy, couples therapy, and group counseling services, as well as regular workshops and seminars concerning psychological issues. Psychologists, social workers, and other licensed professionals provide evaluations and treatment of individuals wanting support with mental health and health limiting conditions, as well as screening and referral of individuals whose needs may exceed the resources of the center.

Psychological counseling varies depending on the particular concerns clients have and the personalities of both the client and therapist. When choosing a therapist, it's important to find someone who can be helpful to you, who understands you, who you can trust, and with whom you feel comfortable.

In counseling and psychological services, the therapists at RYAH aim to provide a safe, supportive environment in which clients can explore their concerns. We help clients explore feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, as well as the interrelationships among them. Through counseling, clients come to understand themselves better, identify and meet their goals, take better care of themselves, and create the changes that they seek. It sometimes can be difficult to know what to do to feel better and lead a more satisfying life. Combining multiple approaches and tools can augment efforts towards reducing and eliminating the things that impede us from being our best.

When clients permit us to do so, psychotherapists at RYAH work closely with other professionals to develop a comprehensive, coordinated approach. We believe in integrating different approaches to treatment and integrating the care of mind, body and spirit. We coordinate care with other health and healing professionals to design and implement sound approaches toward health. It is well known that the body and brain produce chemicals that influence our emotional, mental, and physical experiences. Professionals at RYAH are dedicated to understanding the mind-body connection. For example, our bodies are constantly reacting to stress and can store unresolved emotions and traumatic experiences. Psychological issues sometimes arise during bodywork (such as massage), energy treatments, and yoga practice. Psychotherapy may be helpful in processing these experiences or furthering work to understand, resolve or alter patterns that negatively influence the body-mind. Similarly, psychotherapists may work with physicians and other health care professionals when clients' concerns have brought them in for pain management, gastric distress, and chronic physical conditions or illnesses that are related to or influenced by psychological factors.

Therapy sessions and evaluations are generally 45-50 minutes long. Fees for services are discussed with individual mental health professionals (as they depend on individual factors such as client needs, insurance policies, and integration with other treatment modalities).
